Credit Scores

What A Credit Score Actually Measures

Scores are produced by models, not by opinions. Understanding the general categories helps set realistic expectations.

A credit score is a number produced by a scoring model using the information in a credit report at a specific moment. Different models, and different versions of the same model, can produce different numbers from the same file.

General categories models consider

Most widely used models weigh broadly similar categories:

  • Payment history
  • Amounts owed relative to available credit
  • Length of credit history
  • Mix of credit types
  • Recent applications for credit

Why no one can promise a number

Because scores respond to the whole file, a single change can move a score up, down, or not at all. Any service that promises a specific score increase is making a promise it cannot keep.
